Isai Thuvakka Padalgal [Tamizh]
[Learners First Songs]
By Smt. D. Pattammal
Translated by P. R. Ramachander

[Here is a remarkable collection of songs for the student who is beginning to learn Carnatic Music. For some reason, all over Tamil Nadu, songs other than Tamil are used for this purpose. But I think it is only proper that they begin with simple songs written in Tamil. The songs in Tamil script is available at: www.dpattammal.com/isai-thuvaka-padalgal.htm]

Madhava Geetham [A Musical Drama of 26 Songs]
By D. Pattammal
Translated by P. R. Ramachander

[Jaya Deva's Gita Govinda is an immortal epic poem which is popularly sing in South India. Since it is written in a poetic style of eight lines per verse it is also called Ashtapadi. The original book is the story of three characters Krishna, Radha and her friend. Radha does not understand how to join with Krishna. Efforts are made on her behalf by her friend. Then Krishna himself comes and joins with Radha. This book has twenty four sections and has explicit descriptions of several love scenes. Philosophers feel that in this story the three characters are Paramathma (Krishna), Jeevathma (Radha) and Guru (Radha's friend). The jeevathma wants to join with the Paramathma. The Guru teaches and guides Jeevathma the method of doing it. When Jeevathma loses its pride and selfishness, The Parmathma himself comes and joins with the Jeevathma. The great Vidushi Smt. D. Pattammal has written 24 poems, following the same Raga as the 24 sections of Ashta Padi, in a very simple Tamil. The tamil verses of this music drama (Madhava Geetham) can be found at:
www.dpattammal.com/madhava-geetham.htm. I have tried to translate this great work in to English.]
